The ReBirth Brass Band, a contemporary, New Orleans-style jazz outfit, will go into labor March 5-6 at the Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay.
Formed in 1983, the ReBirth Brass Band has long since graduated from its beginnings — the streets of New Orleans — to performing concerts in theaters and festivals worldwide.
“When people come to see us play, they have big expectations,” said band member Phillip Frazier in a biography. “They want to forget about their troubles, their bills, their losses, their pain. That’s what we strive for, making folks feel good regardless of what they’re going through in their lives. And that’s hard work … to try and please all the people all the time.”
However, the band seems to be doing a reasonable job of it. The ReBirth Brass Band reportedly is a popular party ticket, and its shows often are given positive reviews.
“This highly animated group of young musicians, who are well-received throughout Japan, Africa, Israel and Switzerland, produced a highly energetic project with a joyous atmosphere that could lighten up any party,” Allaboutjazz.com wrote in a recent review. “Their superb combinations of tight passages and complex rhythms are trailblazers of progressive brass music as they take the music to the outer limits.”
Using syncopation and adding licks and rhythms absorbed from reggae, hip-hop and pop, ReBirth incorporates a wide range of genres into its sound — from jazz and rock to bebop. Songs by Prince, James Brown, Bob Marley, TLC, Michael Jackson, Rick James and War have all found their way into ReBirth’s repertoire.
The band’s brand of heavy funk has made its music identifiable among fans and media members, who say ReBirth is among the best in its class.
In reference to the competition among brass bands, Offbeat magazine recently wrote, “It’s clear that ReBirth, which boasts 10 albums and has traveled the world, is the band to beat.”
In its 20-year career, the ReBirth Brass Band has made more than 20 tours of Europe, four tours of Japan and a six-week tour of Africa.
The band has shared the stage with the Grateful Dead, George Clinton, the P-Funk All-Stars, Maceo Parker, Dr. John and the Ohio Players. It had a six-week tour with Ani DiFranco.
ReBirth has logged performances at nearly every major festival worldwide, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Glastonbury Festival, the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Nice (France) Jazz Festival.
The band has sold out venues such as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, the Knitting Factory in New York City, Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta, the House of Blues in Boston, Park West in Chicago and virtually every venue in New Orleans.
In January, the band released the 10-track live album “The Main Event: Live at the Maple Leaf.” ReBirth’s latest studio album is the 2001 effort “Hot Venom” on Mardi Gras Records.
